Project Summary

The “Journey to the Big Leagues” blog is a resource for college students pursuing communications careers in the sports industry. By interviewing Quinnipiac University alumni and publishing blog posts detailing their experiences, I created a one-stop shop for everything students need to know about pursuing a career in sports media.

I developed and designed the blog’s branding, conducted interviews, wrote each blog post, and created all promotional materials for social media.

Target Audience

  • College students

  • Anyone pursuing a career in the sports industry

Goals

  • Create an in-depth resource for students hoping to enter the sports industry after graduation

  • Provide students with insights and advice from those who were once in their shoes.

Design Process

I began by researching sports-related logos on Pinterest and sketching out ideas. I knew I wanted to include imagery of a baseball as well as a jersey-esque typeface, so I searched for and downloaded some old school script typefaces to compare.

After deciding on Alameda Script & Painter, I modified some of the type to fit the look I was going for. I integrated the logotype into a baseball based on my favorite sketch, and added “Journey to the” above the baseball in League Spartan, a simple sans serif.

Choosing the color palette was quite easy – the colors on a baseball are red, white, and blue. While an official Major League baseball only features a deep navy blue, I decided that adding a bright blue would allow the logo to pop. The blog is directed at young professionals, so the color palette also needs to attract the target audience.

Once I finalized the logo and color palette, I created the blog’s brand board to visualize all the assets as a cohesive unit. Having the logos, typefaces, color palette, and patterns all together allowed me to seamlessly design the website and social media graphics to match the branding.
